For children to understand how character fits into everyday life, they need to learn to recognize values when they see them. The Values Bulletin Board provides a great reason to routinely explore and post Values in Action and Values Violations .
- Events in their immediate environment – things they’ve seen, or heard about, in school or the neighborhood.
- Actions you take – if you were to routinely ask, for example, “What could we do to show Gratitude (or any value)?” The class/family can decide to take some action (like all sign a thank you note to the maintenance person or bus driver.) Post a note capturing what the class/family did.
- In the news – if the children are aware of sports heroes or TV celebrities, you can leverage that attention to help them develop a more a balanced or realistic view.
- Stories – ask how values played a role in books they read . Then get someone to post a note about it. Television programming may also provide examples.
- Nominations for Here’s To You! Values in Action Awards .
