Sticks & stones may break my bones
Understanding the impact of bullying on your child.

Bullied girl Words will never hurt me - really? Is it just normal kid stuff - a rite of passage? The occasional name calling, teasing, etc. is all part of being a kid - arguing one minute, best friends the next. Bullying, however, is harmful and may have long-term effects on our children - whether they are on the receiving or giving end of it.

When combined with other pressures kids face today, it can be a powerful trigger for a child to make some early life choices with long term impact. By maintaining an ongoing dialogue with our children about these influences, we can be part of a safety net - providing the support, balance and insights they need to support healthy character development.

How do you have conversations with your children about bullying? Does bullying affect children's character development? Read more.

Ideas and tools for building character in children

Susan Adam, CEO of ethiKids, writes this personal blog providing deep dives into the nature of values and character in our adult lives. All is not always as it seems. Sometimes loyalty is not the best thing. What does music have to do with values? The "character roundtable" blog is meant to be a roundtable - a series of invitations to explore our current values paradigms - and perhaps consider new ones. How can bedtime be a chance to teach learning? What values are learned if everyone eats dinner separately? When there is a values violation in the classroom, how can it be turned into a learning moment? Written by Susan Adam, the "moments that matter" blog looks at ways to use everyday activities to reinforce character development. Each entry is a request for contributions from readers.
